A Chocolate Cake Recipe Popular in the Depression of the 1930's

This is a simple moist cake that can be baked in a Solar Oven. The ingredients of basic and can be found in most kitchens. If you store what you eat, and eat what you store, you'll always have your families favorites. This cake has no eggs or milk making it a good cake for people with allergies.

A budget chocolate depression cake with cocoa, vanilla, oil, vinegar, and other ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • pinch salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 10 level tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 3/4 cup salad oil
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 2 cups cold water

Preparation:

Sift dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Add remaining ingredients and mix with a large spoon until smooth. Spoon into a greased and floured 13x9x2-inch baking pan. Bake at 350° for 30  

Dust the top with powdered sugar, or a simple powdered sugar, vanilla, water, and shortening frosting.
